Transitioning into the New Era with some help....

Hello all.
I am new to the whole VO universe and am also determined to find a way to earn a small living doing this type of work. After a bizarre year of loss and bewilderment, I am starting life over again at 41 and am seeking a mentor or guide to finding my way on this path. I have a strong voice that decades of people have said I should use in this field. Yes, I have done on-air personality work and simple broadcast spots for local businesses, yet I am truly needing an 'IN' to the serious side of recording. I am ultra-Tech savvy and have several recording applications and a decent mic. I am seeing very little actual 'work' being offered...anywhere. And those lucky few that are getting work are pretty reluctant to share the to speak. This year has seen me conquer a rare form of cancer and I simply HAVE to find a way to locate work from home opportunities. I need a hand up. I am no longer attractive to employers due to the health deal. I am fine now, yet unemployable in the work a day world of business, if that makes sense. I gotta' find a path here, I ask anyone out pass along some strong, substantive ideas, suggestions or opportunities. I have never asked for anything in my life, but right now...I have to get back on my feet again. Please let me know of anything....anything at all.

Thanks Charles. I will make every attempt to utilize those here that are kind and helpful. I have run into several people here that seem to think they are the only people allowed to work in the industry and have no time for us little folk. I realize the market is struggling and things are tough all over, yet my situation is a little different and I need some answers...soon.
Thanks again for the heads up and I hope to add you as a friend here!
Best of luck in the coming year and all after...

If you haven't yet, pick up a copy of "The Art of Voice Acting" by James Alberger--it'll give you a good overview of the field, and some ideas of how to run it as a business. Many of the top coaches and mentors are on this site--join their groups and talk to them, they're all friendly and approachable.

Best of luck to you!
