Hello, I am looking for some recommendations for a voice over coach. I would prefer in-person/in-studio. I have over 20 years of radio experience and over 5 years (part-time) voice over experience. I am in the midwest (Minnesota) and willing to travel for a good 1-2 day one on one workshop.
I'm not aware of many VO coaches who are willing (or available) to devote one or two days to exclusively working with a single client. It's simply not cost-effective when they can teach a two-day weekend workshop with a dozen students. And even if you can find an available coach to work with you it will likely be very expensive.
OK. with that said, you have a couple of options: If you go to www.VoiceActing.com and click on the Resources menu button at the left, you'll be taken to our VO Resources section. You'll need to fill out a form to get free access, but when you've done that you'll have access to our list of several hundred VO coaches around the US (look at the sub-menu on the right for VO Coaches). With that in hand, you can start contacting prospective coaches to see if you can find one to work with you.
Alternatively, you might consider attending a small-group weekend workshop. The price will definitely be considerably more affordable, and you may be surprised at what you learn. And although you may not be getting continuous one-on-one attention, you'll be learning from both your personal mic time and when others in the class are on mic. We have a Performance Essentials workshop coming up later this month in San Diego (March 30-April 1, 2012). We've had professional actors and VO talent with more than a dozen years of experience tell us they've learned things in our workshop that they didn't get in any of their acting classes, other VO workshops, or studio sessions. Go to www.VoiceActing.com and click on the Training menu button to see the types of training we offer.
And finally, you might want to consider attending VOICE 2012 in June. Many of the past VOICE attendees have connected with coaches at the VOICE convention who have accelerated their VO careers. If you want to get the inside scoop on VOICE, just join the VOICE 2012 Facebook page.
Hope this helps.
