Greetings Voiceover Universe Family!
2014 is a promising and exciting year for Voiceover! I recently spoke with Rudy Gaskins – He and his wife Joan Baker are the co-founders and life-force of That’s Voiceover!™, an annual career expo, and the newly formed Society of Voice Arts and Sciences™ (SOVAS™).
Rudy who gave me the scoop on a super exciting expanding program of the Society of Voice Arts and Sciences™ called the Voice Arts™ Awards (VAA). SOVAS™, a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation, works to connect job seekers to the best sources of training, education, networking, mentoring and employment opportunities within the voiceover industry. SOVAS™ is uniquely positioned to carry out this mission through its That’s Voiceover!™ Career Expo, the 1st Annual Voice Arts™ Awards and several scholarship and membership programs which can be found at www.SOVAS.org.
The 1st Annual Voice Arts™ Awards will be held Sunday, November 9th at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York as the grand kick-off event for That’s Voiceover!™.
The Voice Arts™ Awards goal is to honor and acknowledge the voice actors, creative directors, copywriters, casting directors, talent agents, directors, producers, audio engineers, account executives, equipment manufacturers, podcasters, bloggers and others who create and sustain the highest levels of achievement within the voiceover industry. The awards program’s focus is honoring the voice actor and the team who produced the content containing the voiceover. The multi-layered criterion opens the eligibility to consider work developed across television, radio, and internet platforms – even demo reels. The Voice Arts™ Award competition is currently open and ready to recognize the enormous talent that exists in our industry.
As a part of the 1st Annual Voice Arts™ Awards event, James Earl Jones will be honored with the Voice Arts™ Icon Award. The inaugural presentation of the Voice Arts™ Awards was made to Keith David on August 17, 2013 at the Directors Guild of America as part of the 2013 That’s Voiceover!™ Career Expo in Los Angeles. The award was designed in partnership with R.S. Owens Company (the same manufacturers of the Oscar®, Emmy® and MTV Music Awards®, among many others). The Voice Arts™ Awards are well on their way to becoming the industry’s gold standard in recognition of the voice arts.
With all the excitement building, SOVAS™ is inviting voice actors, creative directors, promo producers, copywriters, casting directors, talent agents, directors, audio engineers, account executives, podcasters, and others within the Voiceover Industry to enter submissions right away!
Voice Arts™ Awards introduces two new categories for male and female voice actors. This category is called the Best Body of Work (for a male actor and for a female actor) and allows for the submitting actor to include up to five minutes of work in at least three genres: commercial, animation, promo, narration, video games etc. The body of work is judged by the quality of the work, not by the expertise with which the compilation is produced. In other words, you don’t have to be an expert editor or producer. As an entrant, you simply put all your best stuff (must have a least three genres) on one 5-minute reel and submit it. There are no restrictions on when the original work was created. This Category is designed to insure that great work done over one’s career is not overlooked.
You can obtain submission criteria and entry information here. Submission deadline is July 31, 2014.
You can also become an Annual Member of the Society of Voice Arts and Sciences™. There are six membership levels with a wide array of benefits for everyone! I encourage you to check out and participate in this exciting endeavor!
About Voice Arts™ Awards
The Voice Arts™ Awards is an open competition voted upon by experts within the various fields that constitute the entry categories. Two votes: one to determine the initial nominees and a second to determine one nominee to be designated the winner in each entry category. Several special awards (lifetime achievement, etc.) will also be awarded. Some awards will be presented during a live Voice Arts™ Awards Gala which will be open for ticket sales to the public. The purpose of the Voice Arts™ Awards is to provide international acknowledgement of the extraordinary skill and artistry that goes into the voiceover acting and the associated roles and to hold up a best-in-class standard of achievement to which the voiceover industry can continually aspire.
The Society of Voice Arts and Sciences welcomes the generosity of donors who want to help provide merit-based scholarships for those experiencing financial hardships. Individuals, national and local businesses who wish to contribute to our various programs and ventures are welcomed – creating job opportunities and raising awareness for the indispensable and valuable impact the voiceover industry has on advertising, marketing, recreations, education and technology — worldwide.
The Voice Arts™ Awards program is administered by the Society Of Voice Arts And Sciences™ Officers, Board of Directors and Volunteers.
