Life Is Too Short

Life is too short to let the economy or any other excuse stop you from achieving your goals. The reality is that the economy is going to continue to move through its cycles and plenty of challenges will present themselves in an effort to distract you along the way of reaching your goals. What you need is a game plan and a strategy for dealing with the challenges. If you look at successful people you admire, they are not successful because they never had a plan or encountered a challenge, they… Continue

Caring For Your Voice

I talk a lot. It’s how I earn money. No voice, no money. So over the years, I’ve learned quite a bit about vocal health and the importance of caring for my voice. Here are some tips that have served me well:

Warm up your voice and your body before you practice, audition, or record. These warm ups may include humming, tongue twisters, yawning, stretching, singing, jumping up and down, etc. Do what works for you. Your vocal chords are muscles that need to stretch and warm up before a… Continue

Are You Teachable?

The key to finding voice over jobs lies in how well you market yourself! The key to landing voice over jobs is your level of preparation and execution. The key to preparation and execution lies in teachability. Outstanding actors and actresses are outstanding because they listen to the director! Even coaches get coaching. I do!

Teachability determines success, especially in the voice over business. Successful voice over… Continue

Don’t Reinvent the Business Wheel

The speedy way to a successful business is by watching and learning from your competitors. With taking the time to investigate what has made their business work, you will be able to discover the best methods and improve upon their model. Here are a few ways to examine your competition:

Watch and Ask: Observe your competitors both online and offline, or through word of mouth. Don't hesitate to ask others about your competitors.

Study and Search: Look at your… Continue

Good morning! After 21 episodes, we are saying goodbye to "Voiceovers on Demand". Trish is on the road a lot and busy with projects and I have been busier than ever doing voiceovers of all kinds. It was a great experience and a lot of fun for us to bring you this exciting program every other week. We thank you for listening. All episodes are still available on VOD, my website and Itunes. That said, I am working on a new podcast for the future that will include voiceover tips as well. This show… Continue

Seems like an easy question but sometimes the money offered is so good, that it's a difficult decision. I have to admit, I have turned down three local ads because I didn't believe in the candidate or the message. If I think about losing the money, I weep but then a few minutes later, I'm over it and confident that I did the right thing.

I'm flattered by all the e-mails that I have been getting from people wondering if "VOD" had skipped town! I've put the show on hold for a few weeks so I could focus on some fairly large narration projects. "VOD" will be back and more powerful than ever! Ha! Look for a new episode in the next couple of weeks.

After years of putting off hiring a voice acting coach, I finally woke up and grew a brain. I decided to go with Marc Cashman and after only one session, I can already the difference in certain deliveries. Cashman is a class act and really knows what he's doing. He made me think of so many things I wasn't originally thinking when reading a script. Thank you, Mr. Cashman! I am excited for the next session. If you're in this business and you don't have a coach, get one! You will truly be amazed… Continue

I am very sad about the loss of Don LaFontaine. I was just starting to get to know him right here on VOU. I had been e-mailing with him because he had agreed to come on "Voiceovers on Demand" to be our next guest. We were throwing some dates around and then he got sick. I still have a hole in my stomach thinking about it. Trish and I were very excited and now we won't get the chance. :( My last communication with Don was him sending me an e-mail after hearing my rap about VOU, which mentions… Continue

Did Voice 2008 live up to the hype? For me? Pretty close. This year, there were two events that I was so excited about, it sometimes kept me up at night. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Voice 2008. I'm happy to report that Voice 2008 was not even close to the disappointment I had after seeing the Indiana Jones movie. In fact, there were many wonderful things that took place. Now, I did not have a chance to see all of them but the lectures that really stood out for me were… Continue
