been too long!! And 2011 is almost here!

Well I am not a fan of New Year resolutions...always seems like something begging to broken! I will however create that long overdue business plan. I mean actually type up what I want to do AND how to accomplish each goal. I am participating in  the VoiceOver Extra Beginner's Course With Bettye Zoller on January 18th! I'm also going to set up those coaching sessions with the amazing Terry Daniel. So there I've put t in "print" Hold me to it will ya?

GKN Weekly Update 12.27.10

Welcome to the final GKN Update of 2010!

So how was your Christmas? Mine was da bomb! X-Mas Eve was dinner at

Mom's, the main course being a Sicilian Empanada (let me know if you

want the recipe). X-Mas Day included watching Asha open her presents,

Seeing True Grit, and for the eighth year in a row going to Tom &

Sue Sylvester's home for Christmas dinner. What a great weekend!

Like many of you, I'm snowed in. I tried to be lazy today but I… Continue

Make 2011 Your Year To Shine!

Yes, it’s that most wonderful time of the year once again!  A magical time full of laughter, joy and holiday cheer. A time overflowing with giddy anticipation, brimming with endless possibilities and New Year’s resolutions.

It all sounded so good until I brought up those New Year’s resolutions.  Here’s the deal with those things, you can’t avoid them. Even resolving to not make New Year’s resolutions is still a resolution.  The whole point of making them is to create positive changes…

GKN Weekly Update 12.20.10

GKN Weekly Update 12.20.10

Happy Christmas Week! Shopping done? Presents wrapped? Stockings hung? It's an exciting week, ain't it?

So last week I finished the first 24 of 50 medical narration scripts. Whew! The hard part about these wasn't necessarily saying those big scary science-y words, it was the narration of formulas. It's not like narrating a list, even thought it's sort of a list. It's more like saying…

Nervous about "the transition"

My non-union contract with my studio here in Memphis is about ready to expire, and I went out on a leap of faith (in my manager) and asked that they not renew my contract but rather allow me to have a union contract instead.

I have to say, I am honestly VERY nervous about the move from non-union/freelance to union. There's the question of which union to join and if I will lose all my non-union clients. It's got me up nights, no lie! The transition doesn't take place until…

Thank the good Lord for the Golden Globes!

This time of year is generally slow for voiceover work in the commercial area of the industry and slowER in the movie trailer biz. I didn't book any commercials in November at ALL and I found out that I got overpaid in November for September's sessions because they added someone else's talent slip to mine. Oddly enough, I asked my producer about my check in November because I told him it was a lot more than I thought it was going to be, not that I was complaining, and he said that it was…

Voiceover Trends - Keeping It Real

[originally posted at 13 Dec. 2010]

One of the keys to voiceover success is staying current. The trends change constantly, and if you don’t change with them, you’ll be left behind.

For many years now, the trend in many types of media – particularly commercials – has been toward more real, conversational reads. Pay attention to television and radio advertisements, and you’ll hear more “real” sounding voiceovers than…

GKN Weekly Update 12.13.10

And a Happy Countdown-to-Christmas Monday! (man, I'm really reaching...)

I'm taking a break from my medical narrations to chat with you lovely folks. I did four scripts this morning and I would like to bang out at least one or two more before I call it a day. I need to do a total of seventeen by Friday so I'm pacing myself. Actually, they're not medical narrations. They're e-learning recordings, but they feel like medical narrations because of the subject matter (chemistry) and…

Before there was a thing called ISDN

When I first started to get some "big time" voice over work in Los Angeles, it was 1982. I had stumbled into a niche, being cast as a voice on movie trailers and commercials for teen movies...Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Porky's, Bachelor Party, All the Right Moves and several others. During the early 80's, I did a lot of this work at a studio called Prism Recording on North Seward in Hollywood. It was in fact a little "house" set back behind a front building on the street, that had been… Continue

2) Type of production your company does (commercials, eLearning, video games, audio books)

3) Contact person; name, title and e-mail address

4) Do you accept demos for review? If so, what is the submission… Continue
