‘Tis The Season To Take Care Of Your Voice!

The holidays are a time of celebration and cheer, filled with laughter and joy and goodwill to all. Of course, no season of celebration is complete without an endless array of parties with tasty delights of food and an ample selection of beverages to toast friends and family. One cannot help but partake of at least of few of these moments amid the chaotic scramble of balancing workload to meet deadlines and auditioning for future work.

This is also a fantastic time of the year to… Continue

Voices are subjective!

Will I get the gig, or not? Will they like my voice style or delivery? If you’re a seasoned Vo talent, you know this is all subjective. So many things go on in the minds of decision makers, producers that sometimes it’s just they had something different on their minds, like Morgan Freeman or a Jay Leno sound alike and they never mentioned that in the audition. If you’ve been in the business long enough, you understand the game and don’t get bent out of shape if you don’t score every… Continue

GKN Weekly Update 11.29.10

And a Happy Post-Thanksgiving Post-Black Friday, Post-Turkey Overload to you! I had a fantastic holiday weekend and I hope you did, too. The corn casserole was a hit and the kids loved the little dinosaurs I gave them. Yes, I bought their love, that's what I do.

Remember that 50-script medical narration project I've been waiting for? They're here! Well, the first two scripts are here. I recorded one of them last week which marks the first Thanksgiving week that I've had a VO project… Continue

Looking for A-list Celebrity to Narrate our Next Film

Vanilla Fire Productions is searching for an A-list celebrity to follow in the footsteps of the great Ed Harris who narrated our first film "Return To Tarawa: The Leon Cooper Story" which is now airing on the Discovery Network and triggered Congress to pass legislation and allowed us to film a sequel "Until They Are Home" which is now in post production.

Recording Software - Sony Sound Forge

[originally posted 11-23-10 at]

There’s a lot of confusion amongst voiceover talent who are unfamiliar with audio production as to which of the many recording and editing software packages to use. Here’s some basic information to help you make a choice.

First of all, YOU DON’T NEED PRO TOOLS. Pro Tools is a great software package for music creation and other work that requires multi-tracking (the simultaneous use of… Continue

The Gig That Saved Christmas!

The movie trailer that I have been currently working on (the one that including the celebrity voice-match I had to do) has been winding down. It's only one of three trailers that I've been working on. The two others are radio and TV spots for the DVD releases for movies which I previously did the voiceovers on the theatrical trailers. Since there haven't been that many trailers coming my way, I have been auditioning and auditioning for local studios, but it has been a very unfruitful month and… Continue

GKN Weekly Update 11.22.10

Happy Thanksgiving Week! Tell me this isn't the craziest week of the year. I assume all of you are making preparations to travel or host. I'm making a huge batch of corn casserole. It's not a casserole, however. It's more like corn bread with an extra layer of awesome. Let me know if you want the recipe!

So, I found a picture of my Red Dead Redemption character, Benton Manning.

Lookin' good, partner! He appears in the Undead Nightmare expansion.… Continue

Should We Hate Dreamworks?

I struggle with the big animation companies using celebrities or "brand-name" voice actors for animated films. It is really frustrating to me to see Dreamworks and Pixar banking on a celebrity voice(s) to sell their movies. Every once in a while, they get it right. Jason Segal did an absolutely terrific job as the villain in Despicable Me and Christopher Walken and Gene Hackman delivered beautiful performances in Antz but Woody Allen? Not convinced he was perfect for the part had… Continue

GKN Weekly Update 11/15/10

Good morning! I hope everyone had a pleasant weekend. Fellow GKN'er Marci Fine came over to record some spots and we had a grand ole' time. Thanks for the chocolate, Marci!

Remember last week when I was writing the GKN Update from CityVox? Well, there were one or two other sessions going on in addition to the one I was called in for. At one point, there were about a dozen of us hanging out in the lobby for maybe less than five minutes, but what a five minutes! It was like a VO… Continue

Celebrity Voice Matching

I have listened to several "Voice Matching" audio-workshops from my friend and VA hero Pat Fraley but today, I did my very first one for real. I haven't been this nervous in the studio in a long time! :D

Until the trailer is released publicly, I won't say which celebrity it was that I had to match for, but if you've been keeping up with my updates, you could probably figure it out. Needless to say, the overgrown nerd inside me was geeking out like a 10 year old on his first visit to… Continue

Directing- Setting talent at ease behind the mic?

Hi there all

Yesterday I had to direct two separate sessions of voice artists narrating for my new audio book company here in South Africa.

The first VO talent was quite an established TV soap actor, the second a young up and coming actress.

The first session went achingly slow ,with the talent repeatedly correcting himself mid-sentence and generally being quite nervous. I could see he had done his preparations but still he couldn't get through a paragraph… Continue

There are some really really good and kind people in this business and especially on VU!

About 20 years ago I became somewhat of a radio junky (in my early 20's). I didn't know what I wanted to do in radio exactly, but I hung around WGCI 107.5 FM Chicago, volunteering to do raps for the station to get a positive message out and it was sorta cool to get to meet some celebrities as they came through and get to know some movers and shakers like Elroy Smith, Doug Banks, Tom Joyner, and yes Rick Party! I don't know when it happened (before or after I started doing the rap) but I heard… Continue

2010 was my year for Museum Narrations

This year is when it all came together and I broke through in the museum market.

The first success came with NOAA's Ocean Today Displays. This was big because the Ocean Today Displays are co-located in The Smithsonian Institute and major museums and aquariums. That means the productions I narrated are being distributed nationwide. I've done 2 narrations since midyear and the 3rd is coming down the pike. Ocean Today

Then I made the… Continue

Change your thinking change your life.

Perhaps you have heard somebody say that thoughts are things? Well they are! And what you entertain becomes your reality. Positive thinkers like Norman Vincent Pele and Dr. Robert Schuler both said this and taught that negative thoughts created negative environments. If you really believe this, then what thoughts do you entertain? Is it of success and triumph, or disaster and despair? Take a moment and envision what success looks like, now think of what failure looks like. Both of these are… Continue

A Bigger Piece Of The Pie

I figured out a long time ago that I'm not the kind of person that equates financial success with personal success. It's a part of it, I mean it denotes how intelligent you are and how capable of supporting your family etc. but through the years I've realized that being rich won't make me a better person. Just one with more money.

I don't know if this is because my Voiceover Specialty is in Arabic, I mean you guys know this already I don't… Continue

VO Biz Observations

Hi. Just a few comments. THANKS!

The way I see the usual professional vo career timeline regarding brand value:

1. Don't understand your value.

You just don't have a clue.

2. Under-estimate your value.

You'll do anything for nothing just to do something.

3. Over-estimate your value.

As if you're not completely replaceable, you're throwing around minimal knowledge/experience.

4. Understand your value.

You know you are… Continue

GKN Weekly Update 11.8.10

Holy hail & sleet, Batman! It is uber-crappy out there today, but I have braved the elements to be in NYC for two recording sessions. So, we are broadcasting LIVE from the lobby of CityVox in Midtown Manhattan.

Last week I had a great recording session with my friend Lisa Desimone. She is a great talent and one of the groovier people I know. It was an e-learning session and we recorded a bunch small vignettes as well as lists (see my GKN entry from a few weeks ago to learn about… Continue
