If you live outside of Washington State, you’ve probably never heard these terrific ads for Pemco Insurance. They are well-written, spot-on caricatures of Northwest residents. “We’re a lot like you,” they claim, “a little different.”
The award-winning ads have been running for about 3 years now, introducing new characters with frequency, so that the audience doesn't burn out on the commercials. This is why it’s a great campaign. It has LEGS.

A Perfect Match
by Kate McClanaghan, www.voiceoverinfo.com
Here’s a little snack food for thought that you may not know about…
matching—The term used when you are trying to recreate the timbre, emotion, inflection, phrasing, volume and/or tempo of a delivery to make a change to the read or to correct a minor error in the initial read.
Also, if at a session the client preferred a specific take and simply wants… Continue

And hello to you on this rainy morning!
This past week involved a lot of "homework", so to speak. I did a ton of home recordings for a series of animated science tutorials as well as a sci-fi audio book. Dems had lots o' big words! Notable terms included Noosphere, denitrifying, and abiotic. As I write this, I'm noticing that they all have that red squiggly line under each of them signifying, that even the spellchecker doesn't recognize them. It was a pleasurable challenge to define… Continue

The world’s leading manufacturer of microphones just turned 85. Happy Birthday Shure!

When the mic is rockin’, don’t bother knockin’! Okay, so what do you do if it’s just not rockin’ and you’re having a tough time getting it to come out right? Instead of getting frustrated and stressed out, take a break and come back to it.
That’s right! Go for a walk, turn up some music, make yourself a cup of green tea or take a power nap. Fifteen minutes can do wonders! While excessive napping doesn’t pay too well, either does excessive stress. My personal favorite? I go out and… Continue

I'm really looking forward to the conference! In fact, I've already added specific classes to my Outlook/Blackberry calendar. You can see the list here

Who's going to Voice 2010? I'm getting excited to see many of you that I have not seen for a long time. Let me know if you're going and we'll be sure to hook up for a brew! :-)

Jerry McGuire’s line “Show me the money” has been my motto and business principle. I just think if you are good, you shouldn’t have to lower your price!
Sure there’s plenty who will; and cheapen their worth in my opinion. Your reputation in how low you can go will travel to fast. If this is your bread and butter so to speak, let them know you have mouths to feed!
I don’t feel bad asking what I feel I’m worth, and you shouldn’t either.
Have you ever paid for something… Continue

Are we excited yet? Heck Yeah! And Kristine Oller wrote a fantastic piece about organization when it comes to conferences/events that Bob Souer had put up on his blog which you can find in The Voiceover BobLog on VU - How to get the most from an event. Thank you both! I know it might be early to talk about stuff to do after conference, but this that I have to add is a good thing to keep in mind while taking notes during conference. Make a note of the top 3 things you want… Continue

I've always been one to set goals for myself. When I was younger it was all about becoming a musician my list kind of looked like this:
- find a good band and get into it
- get some good songs written
- play your first gig
- play to a massive crowed
- get on the radio
- get groupies
- get on tv
- get signed
I was able to achieve all those different goals except the last… Continue

Good morning, my little chickadees!
I'm blogging a bit earlier
than usual today. I have three animated science tutorial scripts to
record today and I have to create pronunciation guides for three
science-fiction audio stories I'm narrating. Them sci-fi authors likes
to use big ole' words!
I want to say hello to fellow GKN member Nicola Barber

pleasure of meeting her in person last week and she was a delight!… Continue

Good morning! Forgive the banality but I couldn't come up with a fake
holiday this time around.
Let's start with a quick word about
last week's post. Remember that logo I showed you guys? Well, I can't
use it. Fellow GKN member Rob Sciglimpaglia, who is also a lawyer, said
it's too similar to the John Deere logo. Bummer! I was really excited
about using it. Thanks for the heads up, Rob!
For the past year
or so, I've been trying to write less about my… Continue

I have just finished recording my demo (which I will receive in about 2 weeks). Does anyone have any suggestions about where I can create my brand image at a reasonable price? I have been given a few suggestions but it seems that everyone quotes me at around $1500 and up. I've already taken an image class (which was VERY COOL) so I have a really good idea of my brand however I'm looking for an inexpensive way to make it come alive.

“Okay, here we go. Focus. Speed. I am speed. One winner, forty-two losers. I eat losers for breakfast. Breakfast? Maybe I should have had breakfast? Brekkie could be good for me. No, no, no, focus. Speed. Faster than fast, quicker than quick. I am Lightning.” McQueen, Cars (2006)
Have I just landed my first role as a character voice in a major animated feature film? “Yes!”, would be a great answer, but alas to do that I would at least have had to auditioned… Continue
