GKN Weekly Update 2/28/11

Happy post-Oscar Day! Did your favorites win? Not only did I forget to print up one of those voting sheets to track my picks, I almost forgot about the Oscars entirely. All I got to say is: Nine Inch Nails won an Oscar!!!

So, last week was very cool in my world, technologically speaking. Allow me to elaborate...

I got studio monitors! The ever-spiny Phillip Banks recommended the Alesis M1 Active 250 but they were out of stock at Guitar Center (BTW that's where I get all my… Continue

Daring Dragonfly starring Michael Ray Davis - how a voice talent creates the magic

There are some voice artists that have wonderful acting ability and experience.  I feel privileged to know and work with a great actor and voice actor, Michael Ray Davis.

Michael has an amazingly versatile voice.  He can basically do any accent or inflection on the planet; has an array of character voices and even has an announcer/promo style voice.  But Michael loves acting and sometimes he is approached with a fun project that incorporates both acting and voice…

GKN Weekly Update 2/22/11

Happy President's Day! Wow, that's two weeks in a row I didn't have to make up a holiday...

Sorry I'm late. I was recording for the bulk of yesterday then I went monitor shopping. I got a set of Tascam VL-M3 monitors. I haven't hooked them up yet but I'll let you know how they sound.

So yesterday I recorded two short audio books: Eight Miles and Under the Moons of Venus. Eight Miles takes place in 1840's London and the protagonist tells the story in the first person. Other… Continue

VO Professionalism

It’s something every one of my clients expects.  But what does it mean?

This is a new age in the voiceover industry.

It used to be that some “talents” could just record a voice job and whatever they thought was acceptable was.  After all, the talent was the “professional.”  But times have changed.

Today, a voice talent is not a star.  Not even close.  Even though numerous celebrity voices are used for voice…

Darth Kid

Hats-off to Deutsch LA! for the spectacular creative on the 2011 Volkswagen (Darth-Kid) campaign, launched during the Super Bowl. This is why it is so humbling to work among those with an amazing sense of target, spectacular attention to detail and just the right amount of humor. May you enjoy great success with this effort.

ISDN problems with AT&T

Here's an email that has been floating around about ISDN problems with AT&T

If you use ISDN, or you have clients or Talent that use ISDN, please forward this to them, and tell them to show it to whoever handles their phone service.  For about two weeks, some of us have been experience some real problems connecting via ISDN to certain areas of the country. Southern CA is the worst for me. I called Telos, and they told me I am not alone. It is a severe problem in some…

Voice Over Newb

Three lessons in...do I give up or go on? Well, I'm not giving up, but man is this a bit rough getting started. I've been doing voice overs to myself for a long time. You know, mocking the trailers and just goofing around. When I do it, the words are mine and I'm just playing. Now I'm doing it "for real" trying to find my voice(s).

Reading out loud and trying to make it sound interesting...thinking about every word, what word do I hit... Trying to get it all as I over analys every… Continue

GKN Weekly Update 2/14/11

Happy Valentine's Day! Look at that, I didn't have to make up a holiday...

Today's GKN update is coming a bit late in the day because I was recording for about five hours. I narrated the first of five stories for "Top Ten Tales of Science Fiction 3", courtesy of Allan Kaster and the great people at Infinivox. Today's story was 77 pages long. I'm pooped! Narrating audio books wipes me out. The energy and focus required to sit still for all that time, speaking clearly and at a proper… Continue

Getting Work – Do I Need An Agent?

[Originally posted 7 Feb. 2011 at johnmatthew.com/blog]

I see this question frequently in voiceover blogs and discussion groups, and one of my own students just asked me the same, so I thought I’d say a few quick words on the matter.

What you “need” depends on what you want. So strictly speaking, you don’t NEED an agent to get voiceover work. I get a fair amount of work on…

From my blog at www.DanHurst.com:

“I hate to ask this,” she said, “because we still want to continue using you for most of our projects, but for this one we’d like to use a different voice.  Is there anyone you could recommend to us?”

I chuckled.  I was not in the least bit offended or bothered by her question.  In fact, I was honored.

Imagine that!  A client trusted me enough to ask for my recommendation.  What a pat on the…

GKN Weekly Update 2/7/11

Happy Post-Super-Bowl Party-I-Lost-My-Shirt-In-The-Box-Pool Day! I hope every had a good time and a safe drive home.

So, I was at my friend's Super Bowl party for what I think is the tenth year in a row, whooping it up, then I realize I'm halfway through my third beer. I said out loud "Crap! It's a school night." (yes, I got some strange looks from my friends, but I'm used to that by now!), poured the rest of the beer out, and grabbed a soda. Why, do you ask? Was it because I didn't… Continue

Surround Yourself With The Extraordinary

When you surround yourself with inspiring and uplifting people, amazing things will happen.  It makes such a difference to have people in your life who support & encourage you.  It can make the difference of a successful, fulfilling life or having an average, uninspiring life.  Life is so short...don’t we all want to feel inspired?!

When you are trying to accomplish your objectives and goals, stay away from cynical glass half empty folks that will only bring you down.…

I had an odd phone conversation this week.

I was in the studio getting some production work done when the phone rang and at the other end of the line was a gentleman wondering if I would take a look at his voiceover project and let him know how much I would charge for it.  I thanked him for his call and asked him to email the copy to me, which he did.

After I looked over the copy, I sent him an email and told him what my fee would be.  Within ten minutes he called, obviously…

A book worth reading.

I guess everyone has a book these days and perhaps mine will be no different, but I doubt. "Camera, Speed...ACTION! An Insider's Secrets to the Real World of Acting" is almost published. It's an opinionated, irreverent and informative outlook on what the average beginning to intermediate actor/voice actor can expect when first breaking in. It's aimed more at the O/C craft, but V/O is also included, as the author got his start in radio and V/O and made a living at same for a few years before…

Joining the union may not be so bad!

So after a recent chat with my manager, seems one of my biggest worries is over! My manager is going to take care of any costs that I will incur from joining. I was concerned that I was going to have to front the money myself or it was going to be taken out of future bookings due to my contract, but that's not the case. I've never heard much about having a VO manager... agents, yes, but not managers. He has done nothing but good for me and been very honest and forthcoming with me, and I've…
