Well, it's that time of year: TAX TIME!!!
I'm going to see my
accountant this afternoon to get my taxes done. So, for those of you
who've never filed your taxes as a performance artist, let's cover the
Most of the time, actors and voiceover talents don't
have their taxes taken out from their paychecks. They issue W-9 forms
to their clients and get 1099 forms at the end of the year. You should
get one from every client who paid you more than $600… Continue

The ripples from the Frankenstein articles have not died yet (thankfully). The input that was provided to the Pay to Play (or if you like Voice Over Marketplace) websites has proven both informative and valuable to them.
I can understand that sometimes when the right questions are not asked then the wrong conclusions are reached.
For those who have not yet read the Frankenstein series of articles, here are links to… Continue

I'm still smiling, although I keep forgetting to write on every VO website known to man, forget to post my links on Plaxo or LinkedMe"Out", or many of the websites I got started on, even though my website is incomplete, and I keep having to concentrate on whatever happens to be the personal "latest" in my life, or someone close to me.
After a year of concentrating on this, I think I'm gonna concentrate on the medical business for a while, but not leave… Continue

I hope everyone had a wonderful time and got all of the chocolate, flowers, and adoration they deserve.
last week I sent out my quarterly newsletter, "The Rognog". It was
well-received and thanks to those of you who wrote those kind replies.
I had some trouble sending it out, though. My number of contacts have
grown so much that Outlook/ACT! can't seem to handle it anymore. ACT!
kept crashing and Outlook only allows you to send out 50 emails at a

I am not a pioneer on most things, including social media. I like to see where things are going, if they are going to build up a big enough head of steam and then decide to join in.
It was that way for me with Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn and now with… Continue

Hi everyone! I hope you've all been off to a great 2010!
Every now and again I find myself trying to catch up on all my social networking, having been so busy with production matters. I don't even know how many of you actually read this thing; I'm not as popular as, say, Joe. :)
But still, my studio's animated movie Guardians of Luna
has been picked up for distribution in North America by FUNimation Entertainment! So I'm pretty excited… Continue

Hello to all in VU! I am looking to get started in VO work after hanging up the mic from radio about 10 years ago. I welcome any and all feedback.

I'm new to VO work. I am NOT new to radio announcing or on-air broadcasting. As I make this transition from previous radio voice talent work to VO/acting work, I am running into the typical roadblocks associated with breaking into career fields that are quite competitive. Some of the roadblocks for noobs like myself are:
1 - Getting current working VO talents to break down the process of actually entering the field and finding actual work. ( we new-comers all realize the reluctance to… Continue

Hi fellow voices. John O'Hara here , in Northern Ireland.
I have been having throat trouble for a while and wondered if anyone might have some tips?
My throat , after talking a while, often becomes tight and raspy.
I feel there is something there, ( mucose) and cough to try and dislodge it to no avail.
I would be grateful if there are any tested remedies I could try.
Thank you… Continue

Happy Post-Super Bowl Day! Did you have a good time last night? I was rooting for the Colts. Alas...
week was pretty great. For the first time, every voiceover gig I booked
I recorded from home. I know that's commonplace for many of my peers,
but it's a big deal for me. One of my goals this year is to book more
sessions from home instead of traveling to remote studios. No, it's not
because I'm a lazy bum (I am, but that's beside the point). It's
because it… Continue

...or were you preparing for the next round of activity in your career?
Did you give up and "get a job" because you couldn't pay rent?
...or did you find a way to take care of business and stay on your career path?
Not all of "us" were on network TV, getting big calls or just plain getting the gig...
For whatever reason... we were struggling... for many it wasn't pretty at all... BUT...
You start looking around and wondering what can you… Continue

Saw something very interesting today. Check out this link.
Since when does Voice 123 advertise on Craigslist? Just thought it was unusual. Your thoughts?

Welcome folks... this could probably be one of the longest posts ever featured on TVE so put on your spectacles and get comfy.
I gave the previous post "Taji's Frankenstein Monster : The Perfect VO Casting Site
" a few days more as the feature on the blog than I planned... just to see how many more voice actors and agents would leave… Continue

And a happy post-Grammy, post-Pro Bowl day to you! I hope everybody picked a winner...
So, the grand experiment of tracking my networking & auditions is over. Here is the grand total: I reached out to exactly 120 potential and existing clients in January. That included cold calls, query emails, auditions, callbacks, and follow-ups. That's six reach-outs a day. Is that a good number? I'm not sure. I guess the important question is: did I get work? The answer is yes. Enough work to… Continue
