How are you doing?
Interesting replies I'm getting lately...
Half of us are doing as well if not better than we've ever done...
Half of us are busy looking up to try to see down...
Most lie somewhere between these opposite poles...
I haven't been on VU for a while because my company was growing...
yeah!... growing in a time when small business is struggling...
Oh did I mention it's a talent based business!
... a really tough thing to do when… Continue

It's a gray, freezing cold day, just like the day I was born, I'm told. I've been a performer more than fifty years now. Started at age five at MGM studios in Hollywood. That was my mother's doing but I thank her for it, although I did not have a "normal" childhood (whatever that is...) she started me on the path that became my life as an actor and singer. Oh yes...I also danced, responsible for my one bad knee but I'm ok with it so far...and was a child and teen model with income sufficient to… Continue

We all want to taste the sweetness of success in our careers, but are willing to not give up? I write this to say no matter whom you may be; or what you have been told, success can be had by you if you are determined and plugged in. That is the part that gets people scratching their heads...Plugged in means your abilities are being shopped around to the right decision makers and you have some wicked favor from above.
I just turned 40 years old and you could say I have been around the… Continue

Many people aspire to become voice talents. Few take the time to understand their vision, what they aspire to become as a voice talent. No, this isn’t the part where I tell you sit down and write out an elaborate mission statement and plan of attack. This is where I tell you to take a moment, maybe close your eyes, and just think. Think of your ultimate goal as a voice talent. What is it you aspire to be? What is your niche? Who is in your network? What does your cash flow look like? How about… Continue

As I recently admitted to another VU member, I have a major character flaw when it comes to projects. I have to gather as much information as I possibly can muster before making decisions. That can sound like a good thing, but (as my poor wife will attest) the coffee table soon fills up with printouts and brochures, scribbled notes and sooo many bookmarks that managing them alone becomes part of the project. Out of this mess (usually) comes a plan of attack, a list of compromises and a bit of a… Continue

Using M-Audio firewire solo with Sound Forge 9.0, transferred from laptop to desktop computer. Cannot record. No sound levels on peak meters. What to do?

With my sincere thanks to the record 96 participants in this faux-dition and the gracious judges (all of whom said the process was very difficult) there are now terrific 11 nominees for you to vote on (11 because there was a tie for 10th spot and 11 is a bigger number than 10 and because I said so.)
First, a little housekeeping (PLEASE READ)
THE RULES FOR VOTING ON NOMINEES
1. The decision of audio’connell voice over talent (that would be me) is… Continue

So I’m parked in front of the TV and the commercials begin. For most people that’s the cue to get up and do… whatever. But not me. I am a woman in the industry and a gal that has always loved advertising, and this is the part of the program that most grabs my attention. And I’ll bet that’s true for you too, right?
Anyway, the spots start and suddenly I am like a dog hearing a high-pitched tone. What the ---? Is that voice track in there by accident? Or is it the client’s… Continue

Today, I was informed that our customers here at Naval Communication Center (NAS) Jacksonville will be deploying their service members to Guatanamo Bay to provide relief and support for Haiti. If you know anybody who is scheduled to deploy to Haiti, please, send them your deepest support. Words can’t express how proud I feel for our country---particularly the shipmates I see here on a daily basis.
While watching a few videos on CNN today regarding the hungry children crowded in the… Continue

Hello, my soggy friends! A bit dampish today, ain't it?
I just trudged through the rain to get to a recording session in NYC. It's the one I can't talk about. BUT I can tell you it's for a upcoming video game for Rockstar Games. That's all I got. I'll give you more info when I can!
TIP OF THE WEEK: I've done a few video games but I had no idea how important keeping their content a secret is! Go to Patent Arcade to see what I'm talking about. Yikes! These guys aren't… Continue

At 47 I was a little (understatement) surprised to have my work day as a database administrator, trainer and designer interrupted by an Inter Cerebral Hemorrhage better known as a Stroke.
I was lucky and a few months later found myself back at home needing to find some way of keeping myself out of mischief. I decided to give the database work away and go back to a media (I used to work for Village Roadshow many moon ago) audio/video production based career.
My first… Continue

I've been wanted to write this blog for a long time. A question on the voices.com finally moved me to do it. The Vox Daily wrote:
> I find it interesting that while many voice over professionals pride themselves on their ability to tell someone else's story well, many of them find it hard communicate their own stories.
This was my response:
It's my job to help clients tell their stories, figure out what separates them from their competitor, and I still have… Continue

Good morning, my fellow do-gooders! I hope everybody had a great weekend. I went to my friend's annual poker tournament. I did pretty badly this year. Three split-pots and I won one hand. Eek!
Continuing this month's pet project, I'm still tracking my auditions/submissions/cold calls. I won't bore you with the details, but the good news is that I landed two gigs via Craig's List! Unfortunately, I can't give details of either of them. I don't have any about one of them and there's a… Continue

Happy New Year, Everyone!
I am very excited to be in the midst of my 3rd year teaching Voice Acting Classes under the Find Your Voice-Voice Acting Institute shingle in Cleveland and at Donna Belajac Casting in Pittsburgh. Over all, I've been teaching this work for over 25 years. In all these years there are a few "constants" that I felt were worth sharing if you are thinking of taking a voice acting class or producing a demo with me, or someone else for that… Continue

I just joined this community but now have to get back to the serious work of editing my documentary. Pretty excited about all of this. I have to admit I had my heart set on being both the editor and VO artist for this project but learned that a guy doing a Canadian accent for an Australian film is not ideal (grin).. Also I tend to have a husky voice that doesnt project well. Not a great asset for the job of narrator! A friend of mine said that in creative projects you always have to be willing… Continue

I keep posting here in hopes of gleaning some of the indie wisdom that I KNOW lurks around these murky chambers. My NEW question for everyone is this:
Do I, as a new comer, need an agent to find me work or simply do all the legwork myself and pocket the 10% for things like, ...well...food, rent...sundries....?
Recently, I had the opportunity to spend loads of time on a movie set here in Nashville and have been called back for another stint as a background extra...I know, I… Continue
