Randy - great topic! I remember my years of doing radio when I'd be yelling (oops - I mean, discussing isues) with my kids, and then had to shift gears when the song ended and I was on-air. Yeah, baby. Multiple personalities help. All parents have t…

Randy, Great post! i like the "stick shift" metaphor, too. Once you learn how, if you actually think about it, and NOT let the muscle memory due its thing, you're going to need a new clutch..or is it a new vocal fold??

Great responses to this blog. I was remiss in saying what I do. I like to take a moment to let the new copy resonate in my brain and then when I read-I give myself a line or two to get into the copy. What my good friend the Late Great Connie Zimet u…

I WORK IN THE VOICE OVER INDUSTRY AS A(N)
Voice Actor, Copy Writer, Voiceover Coach
HERE'S A LITTLE ABOUT ME AND MY VOICE OVER EXPERIENCE
America’s most recognizable female voice announcer, Randy Thomas has been winning accolades and opening doors for female voice artists for nearly 15 years. With over 20 years of experience as a radio personality in Detroit, New York, Miami, and Los Angeles, Randy has gone on to achieve her dreams as a voice-over artist, writer, and now producer.

She was the first woman to announce the Academy Awards, the Miss America Pageant, the Tony Awards, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, and, in 2004, became the first woman to announce the National Democratic Convention in Boston, Massachusetts. She has announced the Oscars seven times and is the first person ever to announce The Oscars, The Tonys, and The Emmys all in the same year.

Randy is currently the voice of CBS Television Distribution's “Entertainment Tonight” and “The Insider,” as well as the voice for Clear Channel radio stations across the country, including WASH FM Washington, DC. She is well known as the voice of Hooked on Phonics, memorably intoning the line “Call 1-800-ABC-DEFG.”

Also, Randy recently co-authored a book entitled, “Voice for Hire: Launch and Maintain a Lucrative Career in Voice-Overs” with her friend and voice over talent, Peter Rofé. The book is in bookstores now! To get on Randy and Peter Rofe's book tour and workshop mailing list please register at http://www.VoiceForHireBook.net.

Shifting in and out of a read..

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A PROFESSIONAL VOICE OVER ARTIST WHEN.. Your day begins and you are reading emails and downloading copy, ripping faxes off your fax machine, recording, editing, and turning around sessions quickly, not to mention, getting dialed up via the ISDN all day long.
Thank the Universe that you get to do what you love. But never take it for granted. Not even for a minute. Remember that every time you get an audition. Let’s face it, in voice over you love having contract work but your fut… Continue

The Care and Feeding of Your Voice

In the voice over business, the voice comes first. When you have the luxury of numerous takes, a bit of mouth noise or worse, a sore throat, can take you out of the game. To that end, I would love to share with you some tips based on some of things that have helped me over the years.

Last spring I got really sick. So sick that I thought to myself that “this is why elderly people die from the flu.” I realized that this was the sickest I had been in eight years.

In my effort to understand how I… Continue

If it's good enough for Don AND it's good enough for RANDY...

For a pre, right now I'm using an Avalon VT737SP. It's a nice box. Definitely interested in the Vox Box, but it would have to come later.

Cheers

Thanks, Randy. I too use a U-87 primarily as well as a 416. I have an opportunity to trade a Soundelux E47 (which I haven't had much luck with) for a Manley. It would cost me about a grand, but it seems it would give me a rich response as compared to the E47, which is just too heavy.

Hello all my VU buds! I am so glad to be here and love all the notes I get. I am sorry that I do not get to visit the page as often as I would like.
Work, family and a new puppy have been keeping me crazy busy! "Thanks G-d" as my Grandmother would say!
Wishing you many gigs and may the voice always be with you! Make sure to stay alkaline to avoid all the nasty sickness that is going around. When in doubt even a tall glass of water with a lemon squueezed into it will help your belly stay alkaline!

Hi Randy!

We could use your marketing insight!!!

I know you’ve been a member of Voiceover Universe for some time, but I wanted to introduce one of our groups to you.

I hope you'll check out and join a group called MARKETING FOR FUN AND PROFIT. It's a group dedicated to discussing ways we can market ourselves - what works; what doesn't. You’ll find some very interesting ideas and concepts there! And we would appreciate your input. Click here for the link: MARKETING FOR FUN AND PROFIT!

Thanks for your time! I trust our paths will cross soon!

Best to ya!

Randy: Thought it would be interesting to collect the top recommended Pro Tools plug-ins used by voiceover home studio users. My list would include: BNR, Normalize, and EQ 3. When you are putting your money where your mouth is, what plug-ins add real value? Share and enjoy! Al
