Are You Stuck?

Are you stuck? Before you answer consider how much of your work is from repeat clientele and referrals, the amount and quality of testimonials you receive from your clients, the strength of your web presence, and the effectiveness of your auditioning and voicing techniques. Take some time to reflect and be totally honest with yourself. This is the business side of voice over and if you neglect it or forget to pay attention to it, you will find yourself stuck. Stuck has no momentum. Stuck does no… Continue

Caring For Your Voice

I talk a lot. It’s how I earn money. No voice, no money. So over the years, I’ve learned quite a bit about vocal health and the importance of caring for my voice. Here are some tips that have served me well:

Warm up your voice and your body before you practice, audition, or record. These warm ups may include humming, tongue twisters, yawning, stretching, singing, jumping up and down, etc. Do what works for you. Your vocal chords are muscles that need to stretch and warm up before a workout just… Continue

If The Mic Isn’t Rockin, Start Walkin!

When the mic is rockin’, don’t bother knockin’! Okay, so what do you do if it’s just not rockin’ and you’re having a tough time getting it to come out right? Instead of getting frustrated and stressed out, take a break and come back to it.

That’s right! Go for a walk, turn up some music, make yourself a cup of green tea or take a power nap. Fifteen minutes can do wonders! While excessive napping doesn’t pay too well, either does excessive stress. My personal favorite? I go out and play football… Continue

Hi Terry!

I know you’ve been a member of Voiceover Universe for some time, but I wanted to introduce one of our groups to you.

I hope you'll check out and join a group called MARKETING FOR FUN AND PROFIT. It's a group dedicated to discussing ways we can market ourselves - what works; what doesn't. You’ll find some very interesting ideas and concepts there! And we would appreciate your input. Click here for the link: MARKETING FOR FUN AND PROFIT!

Thanks for your time! I trust our paths will cross soon!

Best to ya!

Hi Terry,
I just viewed your video about auditioning on voices.com. Sending in 3 takes is something I never thought of, thanks. I have 2 questions for you: When you say send in a CLEAN recording, do you mean only mean free of pops, clicks, breaths, etc ... or do you also mean free of any processing, compression, eq, and such?
Also, I haven't been adding my quote to the body of my letter to the voice seeker, do you think that's really necessary to do?
A very helpful video!
Thanks again,
Dan

Hey Terry! I read where you bought a Neumann, but were kind of missing your KSM 27, which is what I use. Can I ask you a few questions about using the KSM 27? What is your technique for using this mic? How far are you from the mic? Is it tilted up or down? Do you speak into it off axis? What sort of pop filter do you use? I like the mic, but I have trouble with my technique. Also, do you run it through the DBX 286A?

Thanks, man!!
