I admire your tackling this new journey of yours full force. That will help you tremendously. Really, your drive to succeed is the most important thing that all this other "stuff" you mentioned relies on.
One tip: Make sure you continue to take steps to keep this excitement alive. It's important to maintain progress. Do it through workshops and learning from everyone you can. I invest in several workshops every year to keep up the learning and passion in my career. It's important.
Probably the simplest thing to do for more of my specific thoughts on Marketing and the other things I mentioned in the article is to subscribe (it's free) to my monthly newsletter where I have an ongoing discussion about Voice Over Marketing, specifically. (The article you read here in this forum is actually an article I wrote from an issue I sent out to my subscribers a couple of years ago.)
Like I said the newsletter is free. If you'd like a copy of January's issue (Coming out next week), just send me your snail mail address to: John@JohnMelley.com and I'll get you a copy. I send it hard copy in the mail. People started asking that I do so. That way they can keep them in a binder or folder.
Why is it free? I'm on a mission. I think it's important that Voice "Artists" also be Voice "Business People." I think there's too much emphasis on the "Artist" part and not enough on the "Business" part. It's a fun business, but it's also a business.
When people treat it as a hobby and charge $25 for a :60 spot it has a "Walmart" Effect on Voice Over and lowers people's (i.e. potential client's) expectations of what they should pay for a decent commercial.
I want people to get paid for the talents they bring and for what they're worth. I want to raise the bar and I think we can do that, for ourselves at least, by savvy marketing. In so doing, it benefits all of us.
