They All Come Back ... Sometimes!

Posted on September 21, 2010 at 4:46pm 1 Comment

If you've been at the VO game for any length of time, you will come across a gig you do that gets rave reviews. Yet, when the new season rolls around, or the next wave of spots is created, they decide to change the VO for one reason or another. It could be they put a new producer on the project who wants to put his own stamp on it, or perhaps they've decided to change the target demo, or they may just like to change the voice as often as they change their underwear. Whatever the reason, you are… Continue

Long, fun day ... and good news!

Over the years, I've done a few VO gigs that appeared within the framework of television shows. But, those gigs were always prerecorded or done in post production. Today, however, my role necessitated me actually being on the set of the sitcom Rules Of Engagement, performing live.

For anyone who thinks that working in Hollywood is a glamorous and leisurely endeavor, I can assure you that is a complete myth. First, as my "dressing room"… Continue

How'd I do?

The other day, a friend of mine was being inquisitive about the audition process.

"So when do you know if you got the job or not?"

"When they call my agent to book me."

"You mean, if you don't get the job, you don't know how you did?"

"No. But, if I didn't get it, it just wasn't good enough for this (project)."

"Well, how DO you know how you are doing?"

That made me pause for a moment to ponder the answer to my not-so-young Padwan. Because honest feedback is… Continue

Mark: Thought it would be interesting to collect the top recommended Pro Tools plug-ins used by voiceover home studio users. My list would include: BNR, Normalize, and EQ 3. When you are putting your money where your mouth is, what plug-ins add real value? Share and enjoy! Al

Large checks are good! But I'm even happy with smaller checks--as long as they clear! Haha Thanks for the add, Mark!

Happy Summer Mark!
Having diversity brings you bonus in my realm!

I wish you the best of success in all your adventures! I'd love you to join my group Ask a Casting Director. There's a lot of useful info that might help you there.

I'm a Casting Director and experienced actor (4 octave range) for Video Games and more. It's a unique genre, unlike any other that requires a lot of differentiation in voices because there are so many parts with so few lines each. It requires a huge vocal repertoire. If you feel you're experienced as a voice actor with a lot of diverse and useable characters, and you can hit the ground running, you can go to my Talent Assessment page. Classes and coaching links are also there, if you'd like more instant help to get where you need to be to land those jobs.

Stay Super!
