Thinking of Switching to an iMac. Question for you Guys

Posted on July 13, 2012 at 2:01pm 0 Comments

Guys I have been using a PC for many many years and I think I am ready to make the move to a Mac. Can you tell me how you are connecting your Mic pre to the Mac? I most likely will get the iMac.

Here is what I now have...My AT4050 mic into my 528E processor into my E-MU 1616 A/D converter into the PCI card of my PC.

I think the EMU1616 is only PC based and if so, do you recommend anything else? I know the iMac comes with a thunderbolt input and a firewire input...are you using…

Quick follow up to my last reply.   Have only just spotted the equipment info already on your page!  I had better apologise now for the very basic ideas I put forward. You are well set up there.  Adobe is much more competent than Audacity.  We also use the same excellent  NT1A mike.  Howard

Hi, Luis!  Answering your query:  I'm not expert but can answer this one.  A mike preamp will have a line output connection - supplying plain audio, of fairly good strength, much more than a mike.  The appropriate connection therefore is the line input of your computer (never the mike input, as that will overload and distort).  Some horrible mini-computers do not have a line input, only a poor quality mike input. You may have to go into a 'mixer' section of a pc to select line input, or to the Preferences tab of recording software to select external input rather than internal mike.

Next, to record, your computer needs suitable software.  Audacity is a free download, suitable for pc and Mac, which will record and let you edit, as well as apply compression and equalisation if you like to use those.  I certainly do, within reason!   The Mac can record as it stands, using Garageband, but that application is not nimble enough for VO, in my view.

Many people take a different route by using a USB mike.  This has a preamp built in, as well as the electronics needed to turn your golden voice into digits which a computer can record.  I think most come with a disc of some sort to set your computer up to accept this.

A USB mike can be a way to gain the convenience of a mini-computer, and still get good sound, if not quite top notch.   As a step up frpm the USB mike, there are also various black boxes that can fit between an ordinary mic and your computer, and do a better job of creating digits than what's in the pc.   Or so they say.

Can't answer more without knowing what you are using at present.

My pleasure. I always like connecting to fellow VO's. It can be a lonely business.
