Good stuff!!

Thanks for the article, John. Good stuff! Brent mentioned catch-phrases. A producer I I know tells me that all of the actors she works with (including myself) use catch-phrases to get into character. As it happens, it's usually a line from our orig…

How true it is. Memory recall and catch phrases are what keeps me in character. new characters do tend to have a mind of their own for a while before they settle.Great advice!

Profile Information

I WORK IN THE VOICE OVER INDUSTRY AS A(N)
Voice Actor, Voiceover Coach
HERE'S A LITTLE ABOUT ME AND MY VOICE OVER EXPERIENCE
I had my first voiceover job at age 6, but it would be some time before I returned to the recording booth. In the interim, I played a little piano, a lot of drums, and even some guitar. I also tried my hand at volleyball, rollerblading and mountain climbing, and even got a Geography degree from UCLA. Naturally I was exhausted after all this, and decided to return to the profession that required the least running.

Well, it’s hard to believe, but I’ve been in the voiceover business for over 19 years now, and have worked on hundreds of projects in all types of media, from radio to the Internet. I narrated over 45 episodes of the Food Network Challenge, as well as The Young Scientists Challenge for the Science Channel, The History of The Beach for the History Channel, and several special features in the Star Wars Trilogy DVD boxed set. I was the announcer on three infomercials: Sleek Essentials, Core Rhythms and Carnie Wilson’s Lite And Hope, and you can hear me as multiple characters in The Adventures of Andy Applebutter, an animated educational DVD for children. Most recently, I voiced spots for Toyota, Uloric and the Armed Forces Network – as well as internal content for FEMA / Dept. Of Homeland Security and The Big 10.

When I’m not voicing, coaching and producing voiceover demos, you’ll usually find me making amusing commentary at social gatherings, cruising the aisles at Trader Joe’s or patrolling the beach at Santa Monica, keeping a careful eye out for any changes in sea level.

Voice Over Techniques – Follow The Face

[originally posted at johnmatthew.com/blog August 27, 2010]
[apologies for the vid not being embedded, YouTube had embeds turned off for this one]

OK, the analogy may be a little stretched here, but this Seinfeld clip reminded me of a basic voice over technique that I hit on years ago that you may find helpful. And it’s simply this: if you’re having trouble summoning the right feeling or attitude for a re… Continue

Character Voice Acting Basics - Consistency

[Originally posted at johnmatthew.com/blog 8-13-2010]

Another thing to watch out for when performing characters and accents in your voiceover work is CONSISTENCY. Your character’s voice, accent (if any) and speech mannerisms need to be consistent to be convincing. Take a look at the video below, in which Tina Fey and Jack McBrayer of 30 Rock demonstrate the dangers of an inconsistent accent...… Continue

Character Voice Acting - Basic Concepts

[Originally posted on johnmatthew.com/blog 8-4-10]

I found this video of one of my favorite character actors, Hank Azaria, explaining how he came up with one of my favorite Simpsons characters, Professor Frink (also Comic Book Guy). Take a look – it’s short and fun.

In the video, Hank mentions that he gave the Simpsons producers a list of the various impressions and accents he does, as a basis for writing characters for him… Continue

The Door Of Fame

(originally posted Wednesday 9 June 2010 on www.johnmatthew.com/blog)

Now that I have a home studio, and more specifically a BOOTH, people are starting to show up to record their own projects here at my place. Which is fine with me, as it’s fun and relatively easy money.

The other day I was recording actress (and Seinfeld alumnus) Lee Garlington for my friend Janet Wilcox’s book project, when I thought ‘This is the third luminary-type I’ve had in [… Continue
