Profile Information

Voice Actor, Copy Writer
I'm a professional voice actor based in the Pacific Northwest. I had no idea how the voice over industry had grown since I left in late 80’s. I was a production director for two stations then, at the time when voice work was limited to TV and radio. Writing copy and producing commercials was a hoot, one of the most crazy but enjoyable periods of my life.

After taking a look at the direction terrestrial radio was heading, I got out and moved on to tech were I spent over 15 years testing software. A good chunk of that time was at Microsoft banging on code for the Macintosh and Windows operating systems. It was an interesting job, one that I fell into by accident. I was a round peg that fit into a square hole, and not very well at that. Testing software is not overly creative but the pay was satisfying.

I was swept away from Microsoft and became an Amazonian. While at Amazon.com I wrote copy, played with web analytics, created e-mail campaigns, hobnobbed with vendors and manufactures. I got in the pool again and took on two voice over projects. The first was multiple episodes of AmazonWire, a podcast that featured interviews with authors, musicians and celebrities. After that, I voiced a number of book descriptions for the website WindowShop.com. Both of these were freebies and I found myself wanting to do more and more voice over work and less and less of what I was hired to do. Not a good thing. I ended up totally bailing on voice over work in favor of focusing on what I was paid to do. I got out of the pool. Sad.

OK, this is were it gets better. I left Amazon and took some badly needed time off to get my soul aligned with my brain so that I could recognize and understand my passions. The VO water looked temping and that’s when I realized what my number one passion with a bullet was.

So, I’m in the pool again and I just wanted to say, hey. Based on what I see on the BB, there are a number of talented swimmers that I hope to get to know better. Right now, I’m on shallow end but gravitating to deeper waters. Thanks for giving me a place to swim.

The Magic Phrase that Pays

Posted on May 20, 2014 at 6:51pm 0 Comments

There is a small two-word phrase that carries much force. The utterance of these words could make you a hero in a child’s’ eyes. Saying these words to big macho men could melt their hearts. If you said this to your mom, she’d smile, knowing that she taught you well. Telling this phrase to your clients will let them know you appreciate their business.

Imagine a scenario where you work hard to get the business of a recognized client. You establish a professional…

A Standard in Which to be Recognized

I take my car to a locally owned garage here in Coupeville. I get along well with the mechanics and I’ve always driven away feeling like my needs were met. When I first moved to the area, I considered a few auto repair shops. One of the things I took into account was whether a shop had Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification. I understand what the certification stands for and know that it’s not easy to acquire. To be ASE Certified, mechanics take a number of exams, which typically…

Go Paperless with Foxit PDF

When I was preparing to open the door of my voice-over business, I made a list of all the office goodies I needed. One of the items was a printer, and I had my mind set on a multifunction unit. I thought having print/fax/scan capabilities in one easy to use box would be the most efficient way to go. I made the purchase and printed off into the sunset.…

Five DIY Home Studio Voice-over Tips

Posted on June 13, 2012 at 2:23pm 2 Comments

As work from home voice-artists, we are a segregated lot. Our time recording is spent in the lonely convenience of closets, spare bedrooms, under moving blanket tents and for the truly fortunate, a sound booth. Regardless of where we record, we are usually solo, self-directing to the point of our best performance. Sure, there are patched or ISDN sessions with directors talking to us from some remote location. Still, we are standing by ourselves, behind a mic and putting our best VO effort…

Hi, Christopher.  Glad to welcome you as a friend, thankyou!  Your tips are very helpful.  It's too easy to overlook practice when we are yapping one way or another most of the day - to friends, the cat, the mike, anything/person that will listen!
