HERE'S A LITTLE ABOUT ME AND MY VOICE OVER EXPERIENCE
Began the VO journey shortly after retiring from the Navy in Washington, DC, where my final assignment was working in the MTAC at NCIS HQ at the Washington Navy Yard.
I returned to my home in Virginia Beach and began commuting to Atlanta routinely, where I attended a two night VO introduction class at the Alliance Theatre in the spring of 2007. In June I began renting a house in Atlanta and began a four month relocation. In the fall of 2007 I attended a James & Penny 3-day VO workshop in San Diego, followed immediately by a Paul Armbruster VO workshop in Atlanta. After strong urging by those three coaches to find a way to shed my Navy SEAL demeanor on command from a director, I began improv classes in 2008 at Dad's Garage Theatre.
Seven months later I arrived at VOICE 2008, during which I made the best $400 investment ever by purchasing Pat Fraley's entire educational package. I also picked up some training material from Susan Berkley, Kristine Oller, Julie Williams, Deb Munro, and Terri Apple to add to my six feet of shelf space dedicated to written and recorded voice acting training material. Combined, these voice acting veterans provide a wealth of insight and guidance.
Since that time I have attended the following workshops: 2-day animation with Bob Bergen, 1-day narration with Marc Cashman, 1-day audio book (twice), 1-day online/video gaming , 1-day character development, and 1-day mic technique & improv with Pat Fraley. During those trips to Burbank I managed to squeeze in some private coaching with the very esteemed Mr. Bill Holmes.
Two acting courses at the Alliance followed, have just completed my fifth, and looking forward to my sixth in April. In January I returned to classes at Dad's Garage while also studying improv at Laughing Matters Theatre, and have just wrapped up both of those the last week of February.
Feb 2009 - Participated in my first live improv performance at the world renowned Manuel's Tavern in Atlanta. Also in January in Charlotte, NC I attended a radio imaging workshop hosted by Gabby of Voice Hunter. That presents a wonderful and exciting world of opportunity that I had not yet considered.
May 18, 2009 - Am now completely relocated, unpacked, and living in mid-town Atlanta. The recording booth/closet is complete except for some acoustic ceiling tiles to block the noise from the attic exhaust fan that has no off switch and runs when the attic thermostat tells it to. Gotta find that breaker switch. One week ago I finished up another acting class dealing with monologues, and today attended a short orientation/intro to film and commercial auditioning led by a local casting director; a one day workshop will soon follow. On May 9th I attended another Pat Fraley audio book workshop with Scott Brick and Renee Raudman assisting. Next week I will head to New York to check out the annual Audiobook Publishers Association Convention with hopes of meeting lots of new folks from the audio book world. Time to go record something. See ya at the top.
June 11, 2009 - APAC was an enlightening adventure providing clear insight into a promising new venue full of enjoyment and fulfillment. On May 31 I attended another Pat Fraley workshop here in Atlanta during which he covered Everything They Expect You to Know but Nobody Teaches. Pat never ceases to amaze students with his understanding of our industry and the minutia that determines the difference between success and failure. Last Saturday I had the pleasure of attending an all-day Film & Commercial Auditions workshop with well known veteran local casting director Don Slaton. I should not have been surprised to learn how much similarity there is between acting and voice acting auditions.
Feb 2010 - Attended Mary Lynn Wissner's VO workshop here in Atlanta, and picked up some new skills for my tool bag. Also began a four class TV commercial audition course at the Alliance Theater in Atlanta.
