Profile Information

I WORK IN THE VOICE OVER INDUSTRY AS A(N)
Voice Actor, Copy Writer, Studio Engineer, Voiceover Coach, Vocal Coach
HERE'S A LITTLE ABOUT ME AND MY VOICE OVER EXPERIENCE
My first "claim to fame" as a vo talent (one of many nationals) was the famous Chiffon Margerine spot "It's not NICE to FOOL Mother Nature." I'm still introduced as "Mother Nature" Everywhere I speak or teach. I also have been a studio jingle singer. My singing training and career came first, voiceover work followed. I was on staff at PAMS and TM Communications and sang for movie producers in LA, top producers in NYC, background vocals on albums by greats including Willie Nelson and so many more. I was signed as a singer by RCA Records and Chet Atkins and had many chart tunes. But voiceovers have continued to be a staple in my career.
I own my recording studio in Dallas and am audio engineer and audio producer. I've been Creative Director of worldwide production creative houses three times which gave the training I now use in my own company, VOICESVOICES.COM. I've taught at several universities including Univ. of Texas, SMU, several more, but my career was too busy and I resigned my last university position in 2004. However, over the years, my career job has been my work in the recording studios as a voice. I also love reading audio books. I also am a writer and my audio book "Speaking Effective English" is a Simon and Schuster two CD set with Foreword by Edward Asner. This is the greatest job in the whole world. I adore teaching and present workshops worldwide. Hope you can enroll with me sometime. I also phone coach and coach privately in my Dallas studio. All best wishes to you all. You can hear me on The Weather Channel, NBC, BRAVO, in the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC, Smithsonian Museum American History Museum, and so much more. Keep on keepin' on.
RECENTLY BOOKED PROJECTS
Mattel Toys, Lionel Trains 2008, Simon and Schuster audio, many corporate projects (I'm under non-disclosures!), Pepsi, PSA's, Air Force, Microsoft, National Public Radio, Bravo TV Channel, BBC America, hundreds more!
VOICE DESCRIPTION
Specializing in voice acting---characters, dialects, also known for my narrations of all kinds. I am a trained actor using my voice to portray various attitudes and types of people. I tell my students that "voice acting is the most pure form of acting...no costumes or makeup or visual cues...only the voice!" and I believe all actors and singers would be well-served to become skilled as a voice actor! As a singer, my specialty is jazz. I was a studio singer about twenty five years before voiceover work kind of "took over." I've performed worldwide including a stint as opening act for Tony Bennett and with Lionel Hampton and many other greats. I've been a studio singer more than two decades and my voice is heard on zillions of projects from backgrounds on Willie Nelson Albums to the pre-recorded tracks for Ice Capades and Disney on Ice. We studio singers are "anonymous" so you hear me all the time but never know it's me singing! I still love performing, but only in concerts, not in nightclubs, and no longer want to do the "every night" thing singers must do. My days are too busy!
DIALECTS, Character voices and vocal impersonations
New York, Jewish Mother, French, German, Russian, Asian, Swedish, Spanish, British, and many "voice attitudes" from 'real people' to you name it!

Why did the client on 123 HATE me? See...I get rejected too!!

Just for those of you who thought Bettye was perfect, marvelous, great, well thunk again cowboys and girls. Of course, like all of us, I win some and lose some, but yesterday on V123, I auditioned for a job and the voice seeker HATED me. He ranked me 55 out of 55 auditions! OK dude, go for it. But here's the thing...the audition said "union or non-union" so I informed the guy I was indeed a union talent, quoted an approx fee, and added that one of my agents would do the paperwork on it if he so… Continue

Most Small Businesses Fail Because They Give Up Too Soon (From an SBA study!)

Most small businesses fail because they give up too soon, found a study by the American Small Business Assoc. But I'll add to that finding and I am writing an article about this subject too. I'll let you know where it ends up being published online when it's finished. As a voice coach and longtime voiceover pro (studio singer too) who has been through hard times and good, who started out in this nutty business with a four month old baby and no husband, no money, no job, who moved to a new city w… Continue

Stay away from the downer nay sayer doomsday talkers. Take it from me a longtime voiceover pro.

Stay away from the doomsday newscasts talking of gloom and no money and bankruptcies and out of work people. I have stopped listening to most of the network newscasts about business concerns. While we know this exists (always in every country in every year) and car dealers need to sell more cars and clothing stores are giving deep discounts, our business is advertising. We do well in hard times. Corporations need us for training. We are doing public service announcements. We are a part of the fa… Continue

Hi

Great to see you on the Marketing for Fun and Pleasure group - I'm sure you have lots to share, and I'm looking forward to benefitting more from your words of experience (dare I suggest "wisdom"?)

Bettye, I appriciate your invitation to friend you on VU. I am eager to take part in this online community and having the insight of successful veterens such as yourself is very encouraging. If you had an opportunity to listen to my demos posted on my profile page, I'd love to hear your feedback. As for a VO agent in Arkansas, I have not found an agency that deals specifically in VO work. I live in NW Arkansas though, and would be equally open to being represented in Oklahoma and Missouri. I would even consider agencies in Dallas, it is after all only 5 or 6 hours away. :) Seriously hope to visit with you more in this forum.

I am surprised. I thought we were already friends on Voice Over Universe for I fell as if I have known you forever.

I am SO looking forward to the two-day Audio Book intensive workshop tomorrow and Sunday. I am THRILLED with my Audio Book demo and am confident that with this valuable tool added to my arsenol (in addition to my equally impressive Narration and Commercial Demos you produced for me previously) that I am now in even a better position to be able to maket every facet of my voice to any market that my talents are suited for.

Your teaching, coaching, mentoring, and advice for the better part of the year have meant a lot to me and better prepared me and re-educated me for re-entering this business we call Voice Over.

I wish you continued success with VoicesVoices.com and hope to catch as many of your informative seminars and workshops as time permits in the future. I am forever in your debt for your counsel, advise, your treasured friendship and for keeping me in touch with Reality and how this business REALLY WORKS.

Hi Bettye, thanks for the welcome! Didn't know that about your music background. Where did you do your music studies, and with whom? I'm sure we know some people in common, since, well, music is a small circle like vo! I'll look forward to more correspondence with you! Warmest wishes to you...

Hi Bettye, Thanks for the warm welcome. After 20 years of doing just about everything in the biz, voice over is my favorite. I'm looking forward to learning from people like you. Our winters are frightful here, and I was born and raised in them. Come back in summer, we'll show you a better time!!

Well, hello to you, too, Mother Nature! What a nifty coincidence this is, I was reminded of that spot last week, but darned if I remember how. It may very well have been while going over Mark Evanier's archives. Thank you very much for the welcome, I will certainly check out those two groups, as well as your podcast.

More about me? Well, I always thought I wanted to be an illustrator or animator. I draw, I paint, and I've always loved children's books and cartoons. But I could also sing, and I loved being in school plays. The teamwork and character creation of that media is even more alive that what I could do with my drawings. When a drawing or a book suddenly has a voice, it ceases to be two dimensional. I realized two years ago that it was time to stop talking about wanting to do voiceover, and seriously pursue making it happen. I've been picking up bits and pieces of training ever since.

Thanks again for reaching out to this VU newbie! May I add you to my friends list?
