Is Free Market Good or Bad - What do YOU think?

First off, I am trying to keep this very short and concise, but your opinion is important - thanks. A friend of mine recently posted a blog on rates. So, here we are in a free market economy, all hoping to get jobs. Some do, some don't.

If a free market says that competition will drive rates to reasonable ranges, then what happens when everyone else bids the rates too low? Everyone else complains (self included here) AND rates become too low to survive upon, or at least too low to make is worth… Continue

How Long is Your Demo? And Why?

Okay, so How long is your demo, and why? I started with a 1:06 commercial demo because everyone told me that it should be that way. Then I went to a 1:12 demo because I did some editing, and felt extremely guilty about the extra 6 seconds. Then my commercial demo went to 1:02 because of the guilt, but I didn't like the sound of it. Then it went to a 1:45 and I liked it for two weeks. Then I re-mastered it twice, both times still landing around 1:45. The second to last time the snipets were too s… Continue

A VO Audition Request

I received an email today (from someone who will remain nameless), asking for Voice Talent to do "Narration in an instructional way" 3 male and 3 female requested.

We all know that there tends to be a lack of information on jobs. But this came from someone who teaches, and was forwarded from another person that's been in the industry a while. This really surprised me because it contained so little information, but they expect talent to respond. (oh, and I'm sure hundreds if not ma… Continue

A Funny Thing Happened Recently

A funny thing happened recently. In the preparation of "prior to" going ISDN, I was searching studios around town for ISDN capable studios. I don't want to install ISDN (not yet) as it's very expensive. So I've been visiting studios to obtain prices, location, and protocols for setting up such sessions and having several backup studios when the calls arrive for sessions. The funny thing is that some of these studios are simply people who plop out a shingle, get a website, and voila! Now they're… Continue

Ah.....It Used to be........

It used to be that classes and advertisements for such things and services weren't allowed (on this site) except in the appropriate places, ad boxes, and on the calendar; And not sent out in group lists spamming your so called "friends" on this site. Now blogs are simply disguised (poorly) to advertise classes, workshops, only 2 seats left, etc. Fooey!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please STOP turning this community into a barrel where fish are gathered to be shot.

How about advertising where it's appropriContinue

Barry,
some of these spots you did at your studio are far better than some L.A. Demo Companies charging thousands of dollars. Amazing what knowledge and trust in oneself can do for the extent of Art & Quality.
Your Medical spot is exquisite and Mr. Moth is a Classic. These companies were fortunate to find you.

Barry, my man!

I just got back from a little R&R in Central Oregon (Sunriver), SWEET!.

I completed my first paid VO gig last month: writing copy and performing as the Motivational Voice on a new Cardio Workout machine for a company based in London! I'm an INTERNATIONAL voiceover artist now!

Thanks so much for the excellent posting about P2P sites and your recommendations. You really hit the nail on the head! I hope to continue these discussions, as they are important. Just like the Union/FiCore/Non-Union discussions, we are really just scratching the surface on what is the right path for each individual VO talent.

Let me know what's shaking in your neck of the woods.

Thanks!

Hi Barry,

I loved your comments regarding Voices.com / Voice123.com. (now closed to replies)

So many VO resources still recommend those sites as a viable portion of your revenue streams, as you put it so nicely. It seems that it would be hard to unravel their presence among the more valuable 1 on 1 transactions that most of our personal Web sites encourage.

How do you see these online marketplaces fading away or changing in the future?

Cool concept that I'd love to see sooner than later!

Thanks for your thoughts.
