Hi Bob, my name is Patty Mo and I am new to the voice over community... I have my demo done, but now I am not sure what steps to take from here. How do I get it heard by casting agents/managers/talent agencies in order to book jobs?

Hey Bob,  Whats the best digital interface?  Senheiser 416 to mac book pro.  Usb or firewire? I heard the E MU 1616 was good....Anything else?  Help

Hi Victoria!  Forgive me for being so late on this response.  I've not checked out The Universe for a while.

 

You asked a very involved, layered question.  Usually when someone asks a question like this it means they aren't demo ready.  Plus, I have a feeling that this audition was a long time ago now.

 

That said, I'm going to copy/paste a segment from the VO/FAQ page of my website that might be of assistance:

Q: What goes on an animation demo?

A: Your animation demo should sound like a montage of real animation clips cut together into a minute and a half demo. Stay away from telling a story!! Also, never repeat a voice. Once you've established a character move on to the next.

Try to have each character DOING something, not just SAYING something, in each byte. Give them some kind of action to be doing. This will show off not just your vocal range, but also your acting range. In cartoons they are looking for actors first, and funny voice people second. Which means if you are a great actor who can only do a few voices, you have a better chance of booking a job over someone who does dozens of voices, but can't act.

Your animation track should consist of characters with distinct personalities. Everyone can do a witch. What makes your witch different?? How are your kid voices different from the Rugrats?? Nancy Cartwright, who does Bart Simpson, had been doing kid voices for years before booking The Simpsons. What makes her Bart stand out is her acting. His personality is as memorable as his voice. That's because Nancy is a brilliant actress. She makes the words on the script come to life. Think of the script as a skeleton, and you, the actor have to give it a body. When all of this sounds easy, then and ONLY then are you ready for an animation track for your demo.

I have a question: I have an opportunity to audition for a few characters for a local project I am excited about but the list was sent over and it is like

an 8 yr old typical boy, a 34 yr old mom that sings, a 4yr girl that slurs words

how do I do a demo for these.? thanks

Hi Victoria!

Sorry it took me so long to get back. Been on vacation.

I say the best way to find a studio and (or) producer for your demo is to ask fellow VO actors. Listen to demos, either from friends online or voicebank.net. Listen to voicebank demos from folks in your market. Pop them a note and ask who did their demo. Your demo producer will more than likely be your demo director. No need to hire a coach.

FYI-if you feel you need a coach for your demo very seriously consider if you are demo ready or not. They demo is THE final step in your educational journey. By virtue of a demo you are telling the world you are as good or better than everyone else represented or working. You have something to offer no one else has, which is you. Your brand is fully developed and defined, and within the first 4-10 seconds of your demo you are able to demonstrate your brand.
