What is a really good affordable soundcard?

I am looking to invest in a new sound card.  I currently have the M-Audio Delta 44,but am wanting to upgrade to something with a more rich sound.  My budget is still kinda small $3-400 or so dollars.   Any Suggestions from anyone?

Focusrite makes the best breakout boxes for the money. All metal, loads of gain, sweet preamps and a second to none software mixing desk.

I am loving the EMU 1616m. Its a breakout box and soundcard. I have moved away from the Symetrix in favor of its on board gating.

If it's for a mac try an Apogee.
