Big studios contract directly talents with home studios

Hello everyone,

Just wanted to start this idea change of what talents, around here, think of the big change this industry that this world crisis can bring to our profession? Do you think that everyone wants to cut expenses and this means less jobs for us, or the opposite, they will start to hire us directly with our home studios and cutting the big money that is needed to go to a studio and you know the rest?
Globaly, do you thing that home studios are the big future?

Great questions, Miguel. Are you seeing a change in work in Portugal?

I think that our having home studios has begun to be widely expected. There are still times when going into a studio is necessary, depending on the vo you do and what your studio has, but being at home saves $$ all the way around.

Mandy,

What happens in Portugal is that we are used to whach most of the tv with original soundtrack, this was good for my, because it helped me a lot to learn english and so i could speak to the world.
But is also a problem, because this way we don't have many jobs for dubbing as many countries do, most of European countries dubb everything.
I live in Aveiro, it's called the portuguese Venice, beautiful by the sea...i must stop now...otherwise you won't read more.
The thing is, if this will happen in the future, studios hiring talents directly, we'll have more chances, because some people are far from friendships with the studios that do that in Portugal and talent could be hired for they're talent...you know what i mean?

Around 250 million people speak Portuguese around the world...sometime studios and agencies forget that Portuguese is one of the most spoken languages in the globe. My language is in all continents.
This place is also a god place to spread the word.

Muito Obrigado for your time Mandy.

Yours,

Miguel Martins

My thoughts? Home studios are definitely necessary. It's simply expected. However, the fact is if you're working in LA or New York you have to be there. That is unless you're an "A lister, first call talent". Promo work and Trailer work, as well as the auditions for said work has to be done there.
However, for everything else...home studio is the only way to go. Peace out

The only "absolute" in this business is that there are no absolutes.

Interestingly enough...I just received a request from a client that wants me to engineer and edit as well as do the voice over. Don't get me wrong...the way things have been lately with cut backs and less work due to the economy, I would be foolish to say no to the engineering part. But the reality is I don't think I'm qualified. Albeit, I have been doing Pro-tools work for a long time and my home studio for voice-over work rivals anyone'. I think that the engineering for finished product needs to be done by the professionals. My forte' is voice-over and not engineering. All that said, I would hope that clients still rely on the recording studios and the incredible engineers out there to take the raw tracks we do and work their magic. But, alas, I believe the reality is clients want to cut wherever they can and often times quality is left by the wayside, in lieu of saving a buck or two. Such is the way of the world. Globally, home studios are the future. Maybe a good side job is to broker used equipment. Those are my thought. Ed V
